Statement from AFSCME Maryland Council 3 President Patrick Moran on Baltimore City Primary Election Results

Baltimore — AFSCME Maryland Council 3 President Patrick Moran released the following statement following primary election results in Baltimore City:

“On Tuesday, Baltimore city residents made their voices heard in support of pro-worker candidates to lead the city. We congratulate Mayor Brandon Scott for winning the Democratic nomination for Mayor, Zeke Cohen for winning the Democratic nomination for City Council President, and Bill Henry for winning the Democratic nomination for City Comptroller.

“Their primary victories are a clear sign that Baltimore’s residents want city leadership that prioritizes the best interests of working families and the essential workers who provide the valuable public services that keep the city running.

“We look forward to continuing our support of Mayor Brandon Scott in his re-election for mayor and Zeke Cohen for City Council President come November. As we await the final returns for all of the city council races, we are excited to see that all of our union’s endorsed candidates have been declared victors or are ahead in their races. It's clear that Baltimore’s voters are choosing pro-worker leadership for the city. And we look forward to working together to build a Baltimore that works for everyone.”

AFSCME convened a committee of member leaders who work in Baltimore to decide on these endorsements. Committee members reviewed candidate answers to questionnaires and interviewed candidates. The final endorsements were based off of a candidate’s commitment to supporting working people, their record of supporting AFSCME members and union organizing, and the viability of their candidacy. With a long history in Baltimore city, AFSCME took into account candidates’ current and past records.

AFSCME Maryland Council 3 represents thousands of workers who live and/or work in Baltimore.
