AFSCME Wins Expansion of Free Transit Access for Maryland State Employees

Yesterday, July 1st, 2019 HB 201/SB 319 passed into law. This bill requires that the Maryland Transit Administration provide FREE ridership services on transit vehicles to any permanent employee working for the State of Maryland.

It also mandates a study about the possibility and cost of expanding the program to the MARC and WMATA. Now all permanent State Employees, including employees of Public Universities or other independent personnel systems, will have access to FREE ridership in the Baltimore Metro Area only:

  • Light Rail Transit System
  • Metro Subway
  • Local Bus Service
  • Commuter Bus Service
  • Any other systems and services specified by the administration

Expanding access to this program will allow over 6,000 Maryland public employees to have the same acccess to MTA services in the Baltimore Metro Area. We won this fight through organizing and work in Annapolis. Members came to Annapolis for hearings and lobbying while encouraging their co-workers to call and write their elected officials.

Our power comes from numbers. By organizing and growing our membership, we have more resource to fight for better and equitable protection for all Maryland Public Employees.
