AFSCME Maryland Council 3 Congratulates the next Speaker of the Maryland House: Adrienne Jones

On May 1st, Delegate Adrienne Jones was elected Speaker of the Maryland House. AFSCME Maryland Council congratulates Delegate Jones on her historic election to the position of Speaker of the House and applauds the election of the first African-American and first woman Speaker in the history of Maryland. As the Speaker Pro Tem, Delegate Jones was a champion for union members and working people across the state.

“This session, Speaker Jones worked tirelessly to, not only prevent a delay in salary increases for Maryland State and Higher Education Employees, but also to find funding for an additional long overdue increase,” said AFSCME Maryland Council 3 President Patrick Moran. “Now more than ever, we need a strong and effective leader, like Speaker Jones, to move Maryland forward for working people.”

With more than 2,500 vacant positions in State Service, staffing levels at Maryland’s public facilities are at an all time low. AFSCME Maryland will continue to work with Speaker Jones to fill these positions and protect Maryland’s public services. As Speaker Pro Tem, Speaker Jones has been a leader in protecting the quality of Maryland’s public services and working with our members to improve their agencies.

We stand ready to work with Speaker Jones and the entire Legislature on behalf of the 25,000 Maryland State and Higher Education Employees to make our state a better place for working men and women and their families.
