AFSCME Maryland Saves Jobs and Health Care
In the face of massive budget cuts, AFSCME Maryland saved jobs and stopped health care cost increases for Maryland state employees.
Today, the Governor announced major cuts to the state budget in anticipation of tomorrow’s budget submission in the state legislature. What do these cuts mean for AFSCME Maryland members?
Over 200 positions were cut today, of which 80% are pin abolishments of vacant positions. Less than 3% of the announced cuts affect bargaining unit members. AFSCME Maryland will be working with those affected bargaining unit employees to find other unfilled state positions.
It was widely expected that health care premiums and prescription costs would rise for state employees, but we have successfully fought back on this suggestion. There will be no increase in costs for health care premiums or prescription drugs for state employees.
